Like many parents raising a child with autism Mike manages a delicate balance: Helping Jeremy learn new skills, while at the same time providing the familiarity that makes Jeremy's days go smoothly. Mike is committed to making sure that Jeremy has as many good days as possible. Here Mike reflects on his belief that Jeremy sees that commitment and understands his father's love for him, even if he doesn't convey it in words.
What makes a "good" day for you and I, is not always what makes a "good" day for someone who experiences autism.
Sometimes as parents and friends we need to change our expectations - or the world's expectations - instead of changing our son or daughter.
More spontaneity might be something that many of us long for in our lives, but for those on the autism spectrum surprises and new experiences can be especially challenging.
Taking the perspective of another, or "Theory of Mind" is not something that comes instinctively for those on the spectrum. Therefore, it's unlikely that a person with ASD will recognize when someone is doing something extraordinary for them.
Oftentimes parents who devote their lives to advocating and adapting the world for their children with ASD will never experience gratitude in return.
